Yes, yes, I already had two Bongos,
but both of
them were the double humbucker models.
People kept asking me, "But what's the
difference between the double humbuckers and
the one with the single coil in the neck position?"
How was I supposed to answer? And so the only solution
was to stay ready, waiting for a single coil model to become
available. Thanks to my pal Michael Bruccoliere (did I spell
that right?) for contacting me when this one was headed for the
auction block.
This one is strung with the ubiquitous Thomastik
Infeld Jazz Flats, which initially didn't have enough tension
to pull the neck into proper relief, but I used an old Chuck
Moses trick. Well, not that Chuck's old, but the trick is.
The tone is more 'refined' than that of the dual
bucker Bongos,
which are capable of overpowering Godzilla and certain medium-sized
cities. The "HSC" (humbucker, single coil) Bongo is
just a bit more civilized and yes, can get a passable Jazz bass
sort of noise from just the neck pickup.
The magic of these basses is in that four band preamp.
